Erik & Randal hopped three doors down from our office to visit with Rob Van Sickle of Polkadog Bakery. It was a ton of fun hanging out with dog lovers for awhile and even more fun hearing about the history of this local dog treat boutique.
Polkadog is a gourmet dog treat bakery that started in Boston's South End. The founder's beloved dog, Pearl, was the inspiration for their canine culinary journey. It grew from simply baking for Pearl and her friends in a South End kitchen to five store locations around Boston and a wholesale business that shares the puppy love around the world.
All of their treats are made 100% in the US and use locally-sourced ingredients. They focus on quality and freshness using items that otherwise would have been thrown away by local meat vendors and fish mongers. Being so close to a booming fishing industry allows Polkadog to put a piece of Boston flavor in every chomp and when asked what his favorite treat was Rob answered unequivocally, "Our best seller, cod-fish skins".
The stores themselves are like Doggy Disneyworld. All the baskets of toys and treats are at ground level allowing your pet to choose items that they find to their liking. Their locations include the original store, on Shawmut Ave in the South End, Jamaica Plain, just three doors down from Focus Real Estate, Chestnut Hill, Lynnfield, and now the North End.
To visit the JP location filmed in this video head to 42 South Street, Jamaica Plain or visit their website for more.
