This week, Erik & Randal chat about five trends that you should SKIP! Aren't sure when it's ok to be trendy and when not to? Always go for style over trend. Styles are longer lasting.

TRANSCRIPT:

Erik:

Welcome to Focus Real Estate's weekly video blog! I'm Erik Gould.

Randal:

I'm Randal Engelmann.

Erik:

And this week is our monthly Focus 5: Five Home Trends to Skip. Interesting. Five home trends to skip.

Randal:

You know, they're like little things that happen quickly. You know,
little things that come and go really rather fast and these are some of the things that we're seeing go.

Erik:

Okay! Things that are on their way out. What is the first?

Randal:

Number One: Rose Gold.

Erik:

Rose gold. It's fun to say.

Randal:

They're seeing this move out of the marketplace pretty quickly. And I just gotta say, I'm a little disappointed in that because I think it's really pretty. It's actually nice. It sets really nicely against some of the tiles and stuff. But they're saying that's going out pretty quick.

Erik:

So it's not lasting. What's the second trend to skip?

Randal:

Gallery Walls. Where you have the whole full of family photos and things like that. Well, you know we always have to say about those family photos when you go to sell your house. But! We aren't just selling houses. People live in them too right?

Erik:

Exactly these are trends that aren't in. I think we have to redo some of our walls.

Randal:

You read this whole thing and you think about how much work we got to do. Open Shelving: Number Three.

Erik:

Oh! Those have been hot recently in kitchens and in living rooms and things. The open shelving.

Randal:

I know. I've always kind of liked it but maybe people are putting things that aren't so pretty on those open shelves. Maybe put that away!

Erik:

And they get dusty.

Randal:

Yeah, and who wants to dust your plate before every meal?

Erik:

Exactly. That's on the way out.

Randal:

Next one, no bathtubs in the house. Next one: No bathtubs in the house. A lot of people are choosing to go with more of a European-style bathroom and a leaving out the idea of a bathtub.

Erik:
A bathtub in the house is always a good idea.

Randal:

Well, I always say: "You know, it cuts out about half of your buying population if there are no bathtubs in your house." People with children with children aren't going to want to be in that house. Well, at least little kids that bathe.

Erik:

For the most part.

Randal:

And ladies like a bath.  Not to leave you out, gentlemen.

Erik:

And some guys do too.

Randal:

Some guys bathe. Have you ever met anybody that doesn't bathe? Anyway, that's one of the trends that's on its way out.

Erik:
And I think we got one more to go.

Randal:

One more to go! Exposed lighting. I guess that would be the filament bulbs.

Erik:
We've seen those. They've been really hot the last couple of years. They're kinda cool looking those filament bulbs.

Randal:

But one of the things we wanted to caution you on is before you make a large financial commitment to one of these trends, try to understand the difference between a Trend and a Style. Styles tend to last a little bit longer, right? They're part of our marketplace like stainless steel appliances. It's still a style! I can't believe it! It's like 20 years in stainless steel appliances.

Erik:

Yep. Still going strong.

Randal:

Still going strong. If you're thinking about a project and wondering, "Do I put this off because I'm moving later? Should I do it fresh?" I always say do it for yourself, love it, live in it, and enjoy it.
