This week, Erik & Randal have run off and joined the circus! The Commonwealth Circus Center (C3) is located just down the street from our office in Jamaica Plain. You'd never know from the outside that feats of extraordinary ability are happening inside every day! Thank you to Steve Minnihan, co-founder, co-manager, co-owner of C3 for showing us the ropes!

TRANSCRIPT:

Randal:

Hey! Welcome back to Stay Focused! We've got a special treat for you today,

Erik:

We've joined the circus.

Randal:

Come on inside let's check it out. Guess where we are?! We're at the Commonwealth Circus Center in Jamaica Plain. I'm Randal.

Erik:

And I'm Erik.

Randal:

And this is Steve Minnihan with the Commonwealth Circus Center.

Erik:

Thanks, Steve for joining us.

Steve:

Thanks for coming on out.

Erik:

You have a unique school and center here.

Steve:

Yep yep yep. There are very few places in the area that do anything even close to what we like to do here.

Randal:

So what do you do here?

Steve:

We offer recreational circus arts instruction for people of all ages.

Erik:

What our circus arts?

Steve:

It is whatever you want it to be. It's anything in the realm of physical performance. Some of the things we specialize in here are tumbling, partner acrobatics, the aerial silks, and the trapeze which three of us are going to try out in the little bit.

Randal:

Excellent!

Steve:

And juggling. Things like Cyr wheel and German wheel. Things that the general population might not have heard of. Cyr wheel is right over there.

Randal:

Is that where you put yourself in those crazy hoops?

Steve:

It's the gigantic metal hula hoop, and that is actually one of my personal specialties.

Erik:

Awesome!

Randal:

Will you do that for us today?

Steve:

Sure I can do some of that absolutely!

Randal:

So where did this start from? Give us some history!

Steve:

The Commonwealth Circus Center is pretty much brand new. We just formed last July, and we moved into this location in September. So, we're a new entity, and we're new to the Jamaica Plain area. New England is becoming one of the premier areas because we have a sister studio in Somerville, Mass called Esh Circus Arts. That's where I actually started as a student for the very first time. There's also a professional circus full-time training program that happens in southern Vermont at the New England Center for Circus Arts. So the studios in this area are incorporating the same physical techniques and mental approaches and community values around the circus. So Boston is becoming one of the spots that people actually travel to in order to take circus instruction.

Erik:

Interesting. You said you do anywhere from 18 months to 80 years old. So who are some of your clients and customers?

Steve:

A lot of our clients are our youths between the ages of 5 and 16 years old. But we have quite a large adult population as well, and there are many people who are in their 30s 40s 50s who are trying circus arts for the very first time.

Erik:

Great so what special events or openings or anything like that do you have that our audience might be interested in?

Steve:

We're always offering events to the community. On Sunday, June 24th we have our open house for youth students. That's going to be running from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Free for admission. You can just come in, try out the apparatuses, we'll have plenty of instructors who will help you get to know some things.

Erik:

Awesome! And where can we find and our audience find you both physically and online? So we're at 8 Brookley Road in Jamaica Plain, MA. We are almost always open. If you knock on the door, there's usually someone here, and we'll be happy to show you this space. Online we're at CommonwealthCircusCenter.com. And we are on Twitter and Instagram with @ and # CommonwealthCircusCenter.

Erik:

Great!

Randal:

So do we get to play a little?

Steve:

Absolutely!

Randal:

What do you think everybody? Should we go out there and see if we can not get injured? Do you want to say
Randal and Erik join the circus?

Off-camera:

Alright, give him a spin!

Randal:
