TRANSCRIPT:

Erik:

Hi! Welcome back to Stay Focused! We're gonna go around the corner see what my friends are up to.

Randal:

Follow us! Well, we are so fortunate to be back with Stay Focused our weekly video blog, outside today in central Jamaica Plain.

Erik:

Beautiful summer day!

Randal:

At the Elliot's School with Claudia Fiks, the in-house programming director here at the
Eliot School. So first of all, tell us a little bit about what you're doing here at the Elliot school.

Claudia:

Well, thank you for being here. We're neighbors!

Erik:

Our pleasure. Yeah, we're just right around the corner from you.

Claudia:

This is Elliot school we have only been here for a little over 300 years. Not that much.

Erik:

1676 I think I read somewhere.

Claudia:

You can do the math. The school has been deeply rooted in the heart of Jamaica Plain. It started by a group of neighborhoods who decided to dedicate the space as a grammar school. In the late 19th century, we became a community arts-based organization. And today we offer programs that include classes, workshops, talks, events for the entire community of Jamaica Plain and Greater Boston. Children, teens, families, adults of all skill levels, all ages, and all backgrounds are welcome here. And we serve I would say more than 2,000 students per year who come in and out of our school or our partner organizations.

Erik:

And so some of the different courses that you offer are what? Like some examples?

Claudia:

We have a very very strong woodworking program. We have fiber art. We have fashion,
sewing, visual arts. We bring all kinds of learning experiences and then when we are in the classroom together, we exchange that knowledge and we build something new together.

Erik:

Who are your teachers? Where do they come from?

Claudia:
Most of our artists and teachers are practicing artists. They live off making art.

Randal:

It's just not at this location? You're actually out within the school systems and in the in the cities.

Claudia:

We are all over. We also have a partnership with Galatea Fine Arts. It's a gallery at the
SOWA in the South End of Boston. And we feature our faculty/artists twice a year. We also have a partnership for the MFA, with the Fuller Craft Museum. And now with the Makery in Brookline.

Randal:

So where can of our viewers find you online, find you in person, find out more information about you about your classes?

Claudia:

You can check us online at eliotschool.org. Where is Eliot School?

Randal & Erik:

Eliot Street!

Claudia:

On Eliot Street! How can you forget?
