Top Pizza Places in JP: Yelp vs Focus
Nothing strikes a more significant debate between friends and family than where is the best place to grab a slice of pizza. Fortunately, there are a lot of great options right in our backyard without trekking all the way over to the North End. (Our marketing director's unpopular opinion that Regina's Pizzeria is overhyped anyway!) We gathered the top three pizza places according to Yelp and then asked around the office on our prime spots to grab some 'za.
Yelp's Best Pizza Places
775 Centre Street, Jamaica Plain, MA 02130
JPHOP had four stars on Yelp with 82 reviews. That's a pretty loyal customer base. Since they've been around for 25 years, it's easy to understand why. The most recent testimonial by Bobby D. says:
"This is the best pizza place in Jamaica Plain. Their pizza is delicious and has a wonderful crust that is not greasy. I also recommend the Greek salad that is really fresh and tasty. I am not a salad person, but it's a winner.
I have lived in the neighborhood for over 4 years and tried every pizza place in the area. This is easily the best quality pizza and fantastic price."
#2 Italian Pizza & Subs
172 South Street, Jamaica Plain MA 02130
You know it has to be good if a place with no website or Facebook page has a ranking of 4.5 stars and 20 reviews. If you want an old-school tag-us-on-Instagram-free place to eat, this is it. They are, however, on Grubhub which is a nice concession. Here's the latest review from Ivey R:
"Legit. This is my favorite pizza place in JP. I know it's in Boston, but it's New York style. Which is what I prefer. It's not too expensive. There is very little seating and only a few street parking spots nearby. Go for the pizza."
484 A Centre Street, Jamaica Plain, MA 02130
With 4.5 stars and 57 reviews, Ideal Cafe & Pizza is no joke. They also offer some different menu items than the usual joins like the No Nonsense deep dish pizza, and they have a great online ordering site. Here's one of the recent reviews from Lindsay M:
"Everything they have is great. They honestly must think I'm crazy because I order from here so often. Always the same delivery guy no matter what day or what time, he's very nice. Best place to order from if you and your family or friends are all in the mood for something different. Great pizza, salads, subs, and wings. I'll also mention that I can't recall if there was ever a time they messed up an order (and I've made a lot of orders.) They always check the notes and delivery instructions if you're ordering online!"
Focus' Favorite Pizza Places
The Real Deal - Erik & Randal's Choice
736 Centre Street, Jamaica Plain, MA 02130
Erik & Randal both agreed that The Real Deal mostly known for their sandwiches has does have fantastic pizza. People think of The Real Deal as a deli, but Erik & Randal swear by the pizza. RUNNER UP: Il Panino Express on 268 Centre Street in Jamaica Plain. They started out in the North End and now moved their pizza ovens to JP.
The Dogwood - Katie's Choice
3712 Washington Street, Jamaica Plain, MA 02130
The Dogwood is the first full restaurant on the list, but Katie stands by calling ahead and placing a pickup order for pizza. The brick oven makes all the difference, and her favorite is The Willow. A pizza with spinach, goat cheese, caramelized onion, garlic, tomato sauce & mozzarella. RUNNER UP: Penguin Pizza 735 Huntington Ave, Boston, MA 02115. Penguin isn't in JP since it's in Mission Hill, but Katie's pizza heart wants what the pizza heart wants.
Same Old Place - Bunny's Choice
662 Centre Street, Jamaica Plain, MA 02130
New York style pizza in the heart of JP. Bunny is the real Boston native of the Focus team, and if this 40 establishment is at the top of her list, it's for a good reason! In fact, the plain old cheese pizza is Bunny's favorite. If it's not broke, don't fix it, right?
