This week, Erik & Randal were able to chat with Heidi Schork the Director of the Boston Mayor's mural crew. The Mural Crew is a group of student volunteers that help beautify the streetscapes around Boston every summer.

Transcript:

Erik: Welcome to Stay Focused, Focus Real Estate's weekly video blog. I'm Erik.

Randal: I'm Randal. And this is Heidi Schork

Erik: And Heidi is the Director of the Mayor's Mural Crew for the Boston's Parks Department and so we're honored to have you here with us today in Jamaica Plain in front of one of the murals you and one of your crews did.

Heidi: Thank you, Randy and Erik, for having me, I'm so excited.

Erik: Tell us a little bit about your job and what is the Mural Crew? That's fun to say.

Randal: Like Rural Juror.

Heidi: The mayor's mural crew is a summer job program for the city of Boston. We are in our 27th year. We hire young people who are high school students in Boston to paint murals on buildings throughout the city. Here in Jamaica Plain, we have a nice body of work that's within a few blocks and most of the murals that the mural crew has painted here in the neighborhood have been done by young people who've never done anything like this before.

Erik: They're actually employed there by your program?

Heidi: They're employed by the City of Boston.

Randal: How many kids are on your group?

Heidi: We have a dozen.

Randal: Are you all at one site at one time?
Heidi: We are.

Randal: Okay and who designs the murals?
Heidi: Well sometimes it's a collaborative effort. In this case: Purple Cactus. This was my design and inspired by a trip to the west coast of Mexico. When Marie O'Shea, the owner of Purple Cactus, asked me to do a facelift on what was here before I had just returned from a trip to Puerto Vallarta and had been inundated with these yarn paintings and beading made by Wixárika and because it's a quasi-Mexican restaurant and I thought it was appropriate for Mexican influenced mural.

Erik: What are you working on this summer this summer?

Heidi: I'm working on an entire park, well it's actually a small playground. It's enclosed on three sides in the North End. We've got a lot of work to do. It's called Cotillo Playground. It's on Stillman Street.

Randal: Where can people find some more information about what you guys are doing?

Heidi: It's the Mayor's Mural Crew, City of Boston on Facebook and you can Like us or you can make a comment and check out our current projects and our past projects. We have lots of photos.

Randal: Well thanks again for the work that you do.

Erik: Thanks so much Heidi.

Randal: Thanks everybody for watching and joining us. I hope we shed a little light on some of the things that are happening around the city of Boston.

Erik: And definitely check out some of the new murals that the crew is doing this year in the North End and the Eastie and in Jamaica Plain. Thanks so much for watching. I'd love to hear some comments from you below and what you think your favorite mural is in the city of Boston.

Randal: Indeed. And don't forget to Like us on Facebook, everybody.

Erik: And subscribe to our YouTube channel and until next time Stay Tuned and Stay Focused.
